ROUND 1 MINI MAX

RACE REPORT

It took the 15-strong Mini Max field less than half a dozen laps to show that this class will be one of the highlights of the entire season at every round with at least two-thirds of the grid proving that they had race winning pace over the course of the day.

Series newcomer Austin Gray took a surprise pole position in qualifying but couldn’t match that speed in the heat race which, after a huge scrap was won by reigning Rotax International Trophy Micromax Champion Charlie Page. After a crash in qualifying, last year’s UAE RMC Micro Max Champion Benjamin Karajkovic surged ahead to win the pre-final from Page and Gray but in the final itself nobody had an answer for Albi-Jay Stubbs.

Stubbs, who won this year’s British title in Waterswift Restricted, took the lead in the final from Gray and Karajkovic and then, in a breathless display, managed to keep Karajkovic behind him despite repeated overtaking attempts. Completing the podium after a strong run was Atiqa Mir for the brand new Akcel GP team.

  5. Rivaan Dev Preetham (Akcel GP)

Stubbs picked up where he left off in Saturday’s final with pole position in Sunday morning’s qualifying session although in another series of thrilling races he couldn’t repeat his heroics and complete the weekend double.

Oliver Butchard rebounded from a disappointing Saturday to take the heat win on the road but was handed a penalty, giving the win to Karajkovic and while Mir and Stubbs were arguably quicker than Benjamin in the pre-final, some superb defensive driving kept the JNKD driver ahead for the win.

The final was a classic. Karajkovic led from pole with nine karts lined up behind him all squabbling for position. But unlike in the pre-final Mir was able to find a gap in Karajkovic’s defences to take the lead and with the battle for second place intensifying the Queen of Kasmir was able to pull away for a record breaking victory for both herself and her team. With half a lap remaining Karajkovic and  Charlie Page collided which left the door open for a delighted Butchard and a surprised Gray to complete the podium.

  3. Austin Gray (JNKD)
